Defensive gun uses occur approximately 2.5 million times annually, or once every 1.3 seconds in the United States.
In more than 80% of these gun uses, the attacker either threatened force or used force first, proving that firearms do make a difference in these situations.
In over 50% of these cases, the defender faced 2 or more attackers and in 25% of these cases, faced 3 or more attackers. Other means of defense, i.e. pepper sprays, tasers or martial arts would not give a potential victim a decent chance of escape when facing multiple attackers.
In 80% of these cases, the defender used a concealed weapon to deter the crime. This shows that merely having a firearm in your home would not have been effective in these situations.
